Portfolio Links
I wonder if people could post links to their portfolio sites. I'd like to keep up with what everyone is doing, plus they are a great reference for those days when I'm searching for something inspirational.

Great show. Can I post your videos on the web? Kieran made a great site for us. Many heard about your work and are interested in seeing them.

Film Festival Update
The third annual RWU SAAHP Film Festival will be this Wednesday, May 12, at 11pm in ARCH 132. Free Admission.
The Video and Animation class is organizing it and working on marketing. To that end, Kieran has designed some beautiful posters. We have $350 to spend on posters (Thanks to Steve and SAAHP). What I originally proposed was a two prong strategy:
1) One Giant awesome poster we put in a great location.
2) 500 color 11x17's.
You guys like this plan? Time is crucial and I'd like to go to the printers this afternoon if possible.

Final Cut Help
I'm trying to export my video as a .mov from Final Cut Pro. I've done this before by going to File>Export>QuickTime Movie>Save to Desktop
This time it only exports a 5 second black clip. I've tried multiple settings for the compression with no luck. What am I missing? Why can't I save?

Oh Shit Moment
I bought this awesome frame to use today. then took it apart to size it for matting, and what I thought was part of the picture that was framed in it was actually painted on the glass!
thankfully i later found that they make glass replacements and i found one that fit.

MORNING BENDERS / MINIATURE TIGERS TICKETS
Hi all,Mostly I just remembered that Rose (I think it was Rose) posted a morning benders video here a while ago, so that's why I'm posing this to the blog:
I have 2 tickets to see The Morning Benders and Miniature Tigers (who are not very well known but are HILARIOUS guys and their music is fantasticcccccc and I LOVE THEM) in Boston on Saturday the 17th, but there is a giant cake decorating contest on campus that night that I'm participating in...
SO DOES ANYONE WANT TO GO SEE THESE TWO REALLY AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME BANDS FOR A VERY VERY LOW PRICE?
I paid like $30 total for the tickets, but I'd be willing to go for way less, since I would rather someone go and have fun than have the tickets wasted!

I've never looked at clothing like this before:
And this is mindblowing
And can you imagine leaving the shutter open long enough for an entire candle to blow out? It makes me want to try it, but how many nights would you have to waste figuring out the settings?
Also amazingly awesome: http://www.sugimotohiroshi.com/LighteningField.html
and an Interesting take on 2d dioramas.
ok.. I should get back to work since they are paying me to be here.

DM Project
I don't know if any of you are reading this during break, but I'm down in New Orleans struggling with how to capture this city in one image. I've been taking some "research shots" I guess at the first st patricks day parade, down in the jazz clubs and walking around the city. I am getting some great portraits but its not really capturing my feelings about the city. I'm really feeling this idea of new orleans as a welcoming home. So, the base picture would be a house in the garden district around dusk when everyone is sitting on their porches greeting passerbys. Then, I'd like to put a couple of images into the windows of the house so that it was as if the people on the porch were greeting you and welcoming you into their house, and in the house would be the characteristics of new orleans; jazz, food. I'm also toying with the idea of having a streetcar in front of the house. Problems being: the photoshopping. I am not sure if I would be able to pull this off successfully, but I won't know until I try. Its going to be a matter of getting the right angling for the photos so that it looks good, figuring out a good lighting situation so that the photos meld together, and sizing them correctly when I paste them together. I have some ideas that in my head are awesome, but i'm not sure how they'll work out in the real world.
Anyone else struggling?

Hello from Greece
Hi You Guys,
It turns out I can't access my RWU email from Europe. If you've sent me something, I don't have access to it--however, I'll check this site daily, if you need help.
I hope you all are working and playing hard. And you don't even want to know about Greek food--authentic Greek. Don't get me started about the tomatoes.
Update on our project: going well. We're working 12 hour days and like where we're going. Our goal is to finish 1-2 days early so we can get lost in Athens, a city of secrets: amazing antique stores and video art coffee bars tucked away in allies with no signs. If I spoke Greek I could live here (and yes: my Greek is not going anywhere fast).

trying different strategies such as below, and keeping a top of 3 spaces.

Au Francais
These are segments from the collective film "Paris Je T'Aime" from some of my favorite directors.
The Coen Brothers : No Country For Old Men / The Big Lebowski / Barton Fink / Fargo / O' Brother Where Art Thou
Sorry for the Italian subtitles on this one. I mainly included it because Cuarón is the master of long takes. This whole scene is one continuous shot.
Alfonso Cuarón: Children of Men / Great Expectations / Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban

A Few Considerations
Hi artists,
1) Don't think of video as any different than your art. The mistake most artists make when they are new to video is throwing out all those composition, color and photography tricks you've spent so many years developing. You should be able to stop your animation or video on any frame and have it compete with any photograph you've ever taken.
2) Most of you are graduating in the next year or so. This is the time (or past the time if you're graduating this semester) when the goal is to transition from making "student work" to making "professional work". If you think your competition--you know: those artists who want the opportunities you will be applying for in a HANDFUL OF MONTHS--is content keeping it at the student level (even though they're students like you) than you're going to have a surprise. It's MUCH better to fail at making pro level work than succeed with student level work.
3) You are in charge of the scale/ambition of your work. I don't care what scale you choose, although the more ambitious you are, the more ambitious opportunities you'll be able to successfully pursue in the future. However, I do care that you NAIL the scale you choose. For example, if you have profoundly limited time, money, etc than bring in a 2 frame animation that just flicks back and forth like a subtly moving photograph--and where you NAIL THE COMPOSITION, COLOR, ACTING, LIGHTING, ETC. Increase your scale depending on your interest and ambition. The scale is flexible, the quality should not be.
4) If it's hard to do, it will need many tries to get it right (if your luck is like my luck). Meg and I spend a whole day, and usually 20-30 takes to get one 2 minute take that's usable.
5) Please bring to class a quicktime movie that's ready for presentation. What this means in most cases is 5 seconds of black in the beginning, 10 seconds of black at the end (and more if you have dramatically fading music--always depend on watching it over and over until you get the timing right. Some artists like intro logos and text, others prefer not: it's up to you. The sequence of presentation is like the frame around a painting.
6) Worried about what your doing and want a second opinion? Great. You should all get to this point. USE THIS BLOG! Export your project to a quicktime format from the FCP timeline. Create a You Tube account (super easy). Upload your quicktime to your new You Tube Channel (super easy--just go to the site and surf the options--fifth graders do it) and then post your work here for us all to comment on.
7) If you are freaking out, don't know how to get started, are scared about if what you're doing is good enough or are having a hard time getting past the planning stage, here's my best advise: JUST START WORKING. Grab a camera (any quality level), get in the car (and grab some friends if you like), go some place interesting, and just start having fun. Here's a great trick: buy your friends a nice meal. This is easily worth the $30-$50. When you take care of your talent then they will take care of you.
8) Lastly, if you're scared, confused or nervous than THIS IS IDEAL. Making art IS scary. Don't think for a second that Meg and I are not in the same boat. I get nervous with every project and frustrated trying to figure them out. THIS IS NORMAL. The reason I teach my classes in the way I do is I want you all to experience these emotions and learn how to move past the fear. The fear will always be there. Becoming an artist is not about learning to NOT be afraid, it's about learning to MOVE FORWARD even though you're scared stiff.
With experience and knowledge this gets easier, but if you continue to improve the fear will remain. I would argue the absence of fear probably means the absence of creative growth.
